Stirling Astronomical Society Gallery

Giant sunspot 4079 crosses the face of the Sun. Since first appearing as a double spot a few days ago it has grown and now broken up into a group of three large spots and many smaller spots. This enormous complex is by far the largest sunspot group this year. Taken using a Herschel wedge fitted with a specialist 540 nm solar continuum filter, which gives the image this green colour.
