The Horsehead and Flame Nebulae in Orion
© Douglas Cooper all rights reserved.
Within these bright red clouds of glowing hydrogen gas, an obscuring cloud of darker material forms the shape of the horse's head, with the flame to the left. The bright star above the horse's head is sigma orionis, and the other two bright stars are the leftmost two stars in Orion's Belt: Alnitak (just above the flame) and Alnilam (top left). Imaged using an SQA 70 mm telescope with narrowband filters.
