Named after the distinctive cone-shaped feature (lower centre), the Cone Nebula is part of a larger complex designated NGC 2264 which also includes the Christmas Tree cluster and the Snowflake Cluster. The cone structure itself is a pillar of darker gas and dust containing newly-formed protostars, outlined against the brighter emission nebula behind. Image taken in Hydrogen-α using narrowband filters.
