Stirling Astronomical Society Gallery

A display of noctilucent clouds seen over the rooftops in central Scotland. Formed by ice crystals high in the atmosphere, these clouds are typically most likely to occur in the summer months. During astronomical twilight, after the Sun has set, these ice crystals approximately 80 km up in the atmosphere are illuminated by sunlight from below the horizon.
